Wild salmon, trout and eels have been found to carry the virus which now seems to be endemic even in the wider marine environment. Andere soorten zoals forel, paling en haring kunnen het virus echter dragen zonder erdoor te worden aangetast. It is, however, recognised that other species such as trout, eels or herring, may be carriers of the virus without being affected by it.
